Who agrees to Burn the Koran? Certainly not Mayor Lowe of Gainesville!

A Photo Outside of Dove World Outreach Center

I sent an e-mail a few days ago to both Mayor Craig Lowe of Gainesville, FL, and to the pastor of the 'Harvest Christian Church', only about 1.7 miles away from the Dove World Outreach Center, whose followers plan to Burn Koran's on the night of 9/11 as a remembrance to the fallen victims. Both have replied that they oppose this event as it is giving a bad name to Gainesville, and a bad name to Christians.

Here is the message I sent to Harvest Christian Church:

My name is Aadil Malik, and I am a 15-year old Muslim teenager residing in Pennsylvania. Our community, and most of the entire U.S., is highly concerned about the planned hateful acts being planned to be taken at the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, FL, only about 1.7 miles away from your vicinity. I'm sure you may have heard that on September 11th, 2010, the DWOC, a church, plans to burn our Holy Book, the Qu'ran, as a preaching of Islam being of the "devil", and that it will be an act to remember the people who died on September 11th.

To many people I know, this is an act of intolerance and hate. In fact, over 6,000 people to date, of ALL faiths, are on a page on Facebook reflecting their concern and opposition of this planned event, which you can see at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/In-Protest-of-International-Burn-a-Koran-Day/105895039464821#!/pages/In-Protest-of-International-Burn-a-Koran-Day/105895039464821?v=wall

As Muslims, we are extremely concerned and are making efforts to create peace, and oppose this event. I wanted to see if your Church is also taking constructive action in the opposition of this event.

Please let me know your thoughts as soon as possible. I look forward to speaking with you.

May peace be with you,
Aadil Malik

The pastor of Harvest church had this to say:
Thank you for your e mail concerning the Dove Outreach Center.  If you want you can go to my Facebook for July 27th In which I condemn this behavior.  When Abraham was on the mountain for the near sacrifice of his son, Isaac in Jewish/Christian tradition and Ishmael in Muslim tradition (unless I am mistaken), there came a point in which God said "Stop you have proved your faith".  It is time for all people of faith to stop acts of discord and prove their faith by acts of love.  Sadly there are both Christian and Muslim people who will not allow dissenting voices.  As I a follower of Jesus I condemn all behaviors that are contrary to the way of Christ and offer friendship to anyone.  We may disagree but we may be filled with grace in so doing.
I offer you my friendship...

I sent basically an edited version of the same message I sent to Harvest to the Mayor. Another heart warming message is one I received from the Executive Assistant of Mayor Craig Lowe of Gainesville, FL:
Good Morning,
Mayor Lowe is in receipt of your email correspondence.  For your information, I have attached a copy of the Mayor's press release which was issued yesterday.  This matter has also been forwarded to the City Manager's Office, the City Attorney's Office and the Equal Opportunity Office for review. Thank you for taking the time to comment on this matter.
Executive Assistant to the Mayor

The press release is probably the best thing I've read in this entire cause, because it is coming from one of the highest agendas in Gainesville.
